Here's a question for you: In which of these three ways do you prefer to wake up, to be summoned gently into consciousness?

• Sunday, about 11am, in the arms of your lover, who is tenderly and playfully kissing your neck
• Monday, about 8am, your first day in an exciting foreign city, exotic scents and sounds enticing you to the streets below
• Friday, about 6am, when you don't need to get up for another 2 1/2 hours but are woken anyway because your landlord and your Austrian housemate are talking about yoga and laughing loudly right outside your door for about 15 minutes. Your landlord then takes a 10-minute shower, apparently with the bathroom door open the entire time so that you can better hear him singing "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These)," then proceeds to spend the next 20 minutes in the hallway either jumping rope or masturbating, it's hard to tell, but it sure is great to ponder as you lie there trying desperately and ultimately unsuccessfully to get back to sleep
